Kathryn Keats is speaking out after twenty years of silence. Her survival of a life-threatening relationship has given her a new-found feeling of freedom. Equipped with safety, happiness, humor and confidence, she is releasing an album, "After the Silence", has a screenplay written about her story, by Chrisanna Northup, seen on Rachael Ray April 24th, 2007, and is scheduled to appear on several radio and television shows as well as magazines including Readers Digest throughout the world all year, along with several other magazines and will be performing her concert at The Fairmont in SF for Partners Ending Domestic Abuse which begins her \"After the Silence\" Tour in honor of her cause. Sponsors for the tours are invited to contact Keats via her web site at kathrynkeats.com. Keats was keynote speaker for Unity NY at Symphony Hall last week in NYC. Keats describes the violent relationship that held her captive in vivid detail:" We tried to fight his illness, but we didn't win. For fifty-four days, my lover held me captive, now I know that sounds like the 80\'s, but baby it was the 80\'s! This was an ongoing scene that can only be described as a scene from The Deer Hunter, with continuous threats that the Zen Gods were instructing her partner to commit double Hari Keri by dismembering me and hanging my body from the trees." Although she claims she may never fully recover from her experience, she has found the courage to tell her story to instill strength in others who may be or know someone in a similar situation. "We are so proud to invite Kathryn to speak at Jeans for Justice," proclaims Jess Johnson, co-owner of Consciously Social, the organization that put Jeans for Justice together. "Her message is ours; of course we want people to have an amazing time at our event, but we also want to encourage them embrace their power to speak out about the issue of sexual assault and abuse. It's time to end the silence and social stigmas associated with this issue." The concept for Jeans for Justice stems from a grass roots campaign which encourages people to wear denim on a designated day in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Why denim? In a 1999 case in Italian High Court, a rape conviction was overturned because the victim was wearing jeans. The court concluded, "It is common knowledge.that jeans cannot even be partly removed without the effective help of the person wearing them.and it is impossible if the victim is struggling with all her might." From this campaign, transpired the idea for a collective, community wide campaign where artist's designers from San Diego and Los Angeles put their creativity into customized denim pieces that range from highly stylish to highly symbolic. The denim art will be showcased in art galleries and boutiques selling unique collections, couture clothing and custom accessories in Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, Solana Beach, La Jolla, East Village, Downtown and North Park throughout the month of April. The final event on May 5 will be held at a private estate in Rancho Santa Fe, and will feature a runway-style showcase emceed by Ruben Galvan of Fox6 News. The event will also feature films from the 2006 San Diego Film Festival, DJs, dancers, live music by recently charted singer and songwriter, Miz Mandy, live art painting, a collaborative outdoor gallery, signature food and drink, such as the signature "blue mar-jean-i", and an interactive silent auction where attendees can bid on their own pair of customized denim.
